Five Names of Things You Never Thought Even Had Names

Here are five words for things we see almost every day but never thought actually had names:

1. Aglet: The plain or ornamental covering on the end of a shoelace.

2. Ferrule: The metal band at the top end of a pencil that holds the little eraser in place

3.  Keeper: The loop on a belt that keeps the end in place after it has passed through the buckle

4. Punt (also called a kick): The indentation on the bottom of some wine bottles. This serves to make the bottle stronger and more resistant to breakage but also means a little less wine than you would otherwise have.

5. Brannock device: That instrument you see in shoe stores that looks like a bizarre metal slide rule -- it is used to measure your foot size.

I can tell these are going to come in handy at cocktail parties, wine tasting. Thanks!
